The Palace of Versailles sells several ticket types, and choosing the wrong one is the most common mistake first time visitors make. The Palace ticket covers the main château only. The Passport covers the entire estate: Palace, Gardens on show days, Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet.
All tickets are timed entry. You choose a 30 minute arrival window for the Palace, and once inside you can stay as long as you like. Book online in advance: same day tickets regularly sell out from April to October, and the on site ticket office line can exceed an hour.

Book NowPalace ticket: 21 euros, access to the Palace including the Hall of Mirrors and State Apartments. Passport: 24 euros, access to everything, rising to about 32 euros on Musical Fountains days. Trianon estate only: 12 euros. Gardens on show days: around 11 euros. Under 18s and EU residents under 26 enter free with ID but need a reservation.
Guided tours are priced by the operator and include entry. Expect 59 to 85 euros for a small group tour of the Palace and gardens, and 105 euros and up for a full day trip from Paris with transport included.
Buy the Palace ticket if you have half a day, arrive in the afternoon, or visit between November and March when the gardens are free anyway. It covers the essential interior: the State Apartments, the King's Chamber and the Hall of Mirrors.
Buy the Passport if you stay 5 hours or more. The Trianon palaces and the Queen's Hamlet are quieter, more intimate, and for many visitors the highlight of the day. On a sunny day between April and October the Passport is clearly the better value, since garden access on show days alone costs 11 euros.
There are two lines at Versailles: the ticket purchase line and the security line. Any online timed ticket eliminates the first. Nothing eliminates the second, but it moves fast if you arrive at your exact time slot, and it is shortest before 9:30 and after 15:00.
Guided tours enter through Door B, a separate entrance with its own security lane. In July and August this can save well over an hour compared with the main Door A flow. If you visit in high season and only skip one line in your life, make it this one.
Entry is free for visitors under 18, EU residents under 26, disabled visitors with a companion, and everyone on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. A free ticket still requires a timed reservation online.
The Paris Museum Pass includes Palace and Trianon entry but not show day garden access, and you still must reserve a time slot on the official site. If you already own the pass, reserve early because pass holder slots are capped.
Yes, strongly recommended. Timed entry slots for weekends and school holidays sell out days ahead, and summer mornings can sell out a week ahead. Booking online also skips the ticket office line entirely.
You are admitted within 30 minutes of your booked time. If you arrive later, entry is at the staff's discretion and you may wait for a gap. Most resellers let you cancel or rebook free up to 24 hours before.
On show days you can buy the Passport with show access included for around 32 euros. The standard 24 euro Passport does not include garden access on show days, so check the calendar before choosing.
Tickets bought on the official site are non refundable but can sometimes be rescheduled. Most partner tickets on GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Headout and Viator offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before the visit, which is a good reason to book through them.
Tickets sell out fast in high season. Book your timed entry today and enjoy free cancellation on most options.
