Train, bus, car or guided transfer: every option compared, with the mistakes to avoid.
Versailles sits 20 kilometers southwest of Paris, and getting there is easy once you know which train to take. The golden rule: aim for Versailles Château Rive Gauche station, a 10 minute walk from the palace gates. Two other stations also carry the Versailles name and both leave you a longer walk.
Trains start early enough to make a 9:00 palace slot from central Paris. Allow 90 minutes door to door from most Paris hotels and you will arrive unhurried.

Book NowTake RER C toward Versailles Château Rive Gauche from stations along the Seine: Saint-Michel Notre-Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Invalides, Pont de l'Alma or Champ de Mars Tour Eiffel. Trains run every 15 minutes or so and the ride takes 30 to 40 minutes depending on your boarding point.
A single ticket costs about 4.05 euros each way and standard Paris metro tickets are not valid for the full journey. Buy a return ticket in Paris to skip the queue at the Versailles station machines at the end of the day. Navigo weekly and monthly passes cover the trip, since Versailles is in zone 4.
From Gare Montparnasse, Transilien line N reaches Versailles Chantiers in 12 minutes, followed by an 18 minute walk or a short bus ride. From Gare Saint-Lazare, line L reaches Versailles Rive Droite in about 35 minutes, with a 17 minute walk to the palace.
These lines are useful if you stay near either station, and Chantiers is the fastest option in raw travel time. For most visitors staying in central Paris, RER C to Rive Gauche remains the simplest door to gate route.
RATP bus 171 runs from Pont de Sèvres, at the end of metro line 9, straight to the palace square in about 30 minutes and accepts standard tickets. It is the cheapest route but the slowest from central Paris once you count the metro leg.
Driving takes 40 minutes without traffic, which is a sentence that rarely applies to the A13. Paid parking on Place d'Armes costs about 5 euros per hour. A taxi or ride share from central Paris runs 55 to 80 euros each way. For two or more people a guided day trip with coach transport often costs less than taxis both ways.
From about 105 euros you can book a door to door day trip: pickup in central Paris, skip the line palace entry, a guided visit and free garden time. For families, first time visitors, or anyone visiting in winter, the convenience is worth the premium over a 8 euro train round trip.
Half day versions run about 5 hours and cover the palace and gardens only. Full day versions add the Trianon estate or free time. Check whether lunch is included, since options near the palace get crowded at 13:00 sharp.
Versailles Château Rive Gauche, terminus of RER C, is a 10 minute flat walk from the palace gates. Versailles Chantiers and Versailles Rive Droite are both about 17 to 20 minutes on foot.
About 4.05 euros each way on RER C with a Point de Vente ticket. Navigo passes covering zone 4 include the trip. Standard t+ metro tickets are not valid beyond the city boundary.
30 to 40 minutes on RER C from central Paris stations, plus a 10 minute walk. Door to door from a central hotel, plan 75 to 90 minutes to be comfortably on time for your entry slot.
Yes, Versailles is in Île-de-France zone 4. Weekly and monthly Navigo passes and the all zone day pass cover the RER C trip. The airport focused Paris Visite pass covers it only in the 1 to 5 zone version.
